TATTOOS

Contemporary tribal tattoos often use solid black areas, pointed shapes and flowing lines. A design might frame a shoulder, wrap around an arm or extend across a larger part of the body. Much of its impact comes from the balance between ink and open skin.
Tribal is also a broad label used for different cultural tattoo traditions as well as modern abstract designs. Those traditions have their own origins and meanings. Māori tā moko , for example, is connected to cultural identity and should not be treated as a generic decorative pattern.
Consider whether you are drawn to a particular tradition or to the visual character of bold black shapes. That distinction gives you and your artist a useful starting point for discussing the approach, the imagery and how the piece will sit on your body.
